Picante Chicken Wings Recipe
The combination of spicy picante sauce and sweet honey transforms plain chicken wings into a mouth watering appetizer. Honey adds the sweetness to get the kid’s attention and picante balances it out to make it appeal to all age groups. These crispy wings can be served as a main meal even though it is an appetizer. 2 pounds chicken wings
½ teaspoon ground ginger
¼ cup honey
1 teaspoon fresh orange zest
½ cup picante sauce
¼ cup ketchup
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with heavy duty foil and coat with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside
Clean the chicken wings under running water; Pat them dry with paper towels. Split the joints; separate them from drumsticks; remove the tips to make it easy to eat.
In a large bowl mix ½ teaspoon ground ginger, ¼ cup honey, 1 teaspoon fresh orange zest, ½ cup picante sauce and ¼ cup ketchup. Whisk it until all the ingredients combines well into sauce. Taste it and add spices and increase quantities to your requirements. Divide the sauce into three portions. Reserve the third portion for basting.
Add chicken pieces to marinade; toss to coat well; cover and refrigerate it for 1 hour.
Take marinated chicken out of fridge; discard the marinade. Arrange chicken wings skin side down on prepared baking sheet in a single layer; Bake them at 400 degrees F for 20 minutes. Baste the pieces once after 20 minutes with the reserved sauce; continue baking for another 10 until chicken cooks through.
Take the tray out when it’s done; transfer to a serving platter; garnish with thinly sliced lime wedges if you like; Serve hot with the your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes & Tips:
Any part of the chicken can be used for this recipe.
Use ground cumin for the extra layer of flavor.
For grilling version, grill seasoned chicken wings for 12-15 minutes at medium heat. Glaze the wings once or twice with reserved sauce during the process.
Make sure to use a foil in the baking sheet to avoid scrubbing.
